Adeyanju Stresses Urgent Need For Opposition Unity To Stop Tinubu In 2027 Election

Human rights attorney and activist Deji Adeyanju has stated that unless Nigeria’s divided opposition unites behind a single candidate, Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have no chance of winning the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on the Mic On Podcast, Adeyanju contended that President Bola Tinubu’s greatest political advantage is not so much the power of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as it is the failure of the opposition parties to unite.

“There is no pathway for any of them,” Adeyanju said. “As long as Atiku is on the ballot and Peter Obi is on the ballot, none of them is going to become President.”

“If tomorrow Atiku steps down for Peter Obi, then there is a possibility that Peter Obi can become President. Or if Peter Obi steps down for Atiku, then I will now believe that there is a possibility that either of them can become President.”

“The reason why they are confident is because the opposition is not united. If the opposition was united, Tinubu would be packing his things back to Lagos.”

“The reason why I said the next election is just a formality is because this same opposition repeated this shenanigan during the last election, and it didn’t end well.”

“That time, Tinubu was outside the system. Now Tinubu is inside Aso Rock. He is President and Commander-in-Chief. Is it now that a divided opposition can defeat him?

“Tinubu is in the Villa. He is the one issuing directives to independent agencies. Is it now that he will lose?”

“When Buhari was President, Buhari worked against Tinubu. They introduced the naira redesign policy and did everything possible to stop him. He still won.

“Is it now that he is President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces that he will lose?”

“It is not personal. They were the ones who attacked me first. I was on my own. He sent his aides to come after me. I was only defending myself.”

“He doesn’t like me as well. He sent almost all his aides to insult me. The feeling is mutual.”

“He took me to court, and I will prove everything I said,” Adeyanju stated.

Adeyanju also dismissed suggestions that holding elective office automatically placed politicians above pro-democracy activists.

“I am bigger than him because I have made more sacrifices for this country,” he said, referring to Obi.

“I have almost been killed more than 17 times fighting for democracy. I have been arrested and detained. What has he done apart from being governor of Anambra State?”

“There is no if. He will not win,” he said.

I have said it before, and I will continue to emphasize it: opposition parties must unite if they are serious about defeating this current government. Fighting among themselves and causing chaos within their ranks will never solve anything or lead to victory. They need to put aside their differences, settle their disputes, and come together as a united front. Only then can they have a real chance at making a difference in the upcoming elections and bringing about the change Nigeria needs
