Rhodes-Vivour Promises Accessible Housing for All

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for governor of Lagos State, has pledged to build over 100,000 housing units if elected, claiming that his administration will make them accessible and affordable for regular Lagosians.

During the 2027 Lagos State governorship debate, which was hosted on Sunday by Channels Television, TVC, Punch Newspapers, Vanguard Newspapers, and The Cable, Rhodes-Vivour made the pledge.

He stated that the housing program would give ordinary Lagosians priority over the wealthy and that the units would be distributed in a transparent manner to prevent people from owning multiple properties under the program.

“The elites, the rich can do for themselves. The government role is to lift up people that cannot do for themselves, and this comes into housing to ensuring that we deliver 100,000 plus housing units and make it affordable, so that it is transparently allocatable. We are not going to have a situation where one person can own ten units,” Rhodes-Vivour said.

“There must be a legislation that ensures that tenants are protected from arbitrary rent increases, at least giving six months notice before that happens, with a guidance of a percentage by which it can be increased. We are talking between 20 to 30 per cent.

In addition, he promised that his administration would set up a feedback system that would allow tenants to report landlords who violate the proposed law, guaranteeing that the government would act to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

We hope and pray that whichever governorship candidate is elected will fulfil their promises and deliver meaningful improvements for the people.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
