Protect Your Joy: Your Strength Depends on It

Protect Your Joy

Joy cannot survive for long in a consistently joyless environment. Just as a healthy plant struggles in poisoned soil, the heart can become weak when it is continually surrounded by fear, bitterness, discouragement, anxiety and negative words. This is why joy must be protected, cultivated and expressed deliberately. Joy is not merely a feeling that appears when everything is going well. It is a spiritual strength that helps the believer remain steady even when circumstances are difficult. Scripture says, “A merry heart does good, like medicine” (Proverbs 17:22). A joyful heart strengthens the inner man, refreshes the mind and brings relief from the weight of continual sorrow. This does not mean that pain should be denied. It means that sorrow must not be allowed to become the permanent atmosphere of the heart.

There are people who have become so accustomed to pressure that they no longer know how to rejoice. Their minds are always expecting the next problem, their conversations are filled with complaints and their hearts continually rehearse what has gone wrong. Over time, anxiety takes over the inner life and even good news becomes difficult to receive because the heart has been trained to expect disappointment. Do not allow anxiety to take over your heart. Anxiety speaks as though the future has already failed. It presents possibilities as certainties, magnifies what may happen above what God has promised and drains strength before the battle begins. Joy, however, brings the heart back under the government of faith. It reminds you that God is still present, still faithful and still in control. Joy does not deny the problem; it declares that the problem is not greater than God.

In Nehemiah 8, the people wept when they heard the words of the Law, but Nehemiah instructed them not to remain in mourning. He told them to rejoice and declared, “Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” This reveals that there are moments when sorrow must give way to strength. Conviction may bring tears, but God does not desire His people to remain permanently crushed. He corrects in order to restore and reveals weakness so that healing can begin. The joy of the Lord is not shallow excitement. It is strength produced by confidence in God. It comes from knowing that you are forgiven, accepted, helped and preserved by Him. When your natural strength is low, His joy can carry you. When people disappoint you, joy reminds you that God remains faithful. When answers delay, joy helps you continue to worship, serve and expect.

You must learn to encourage yourself in the Lord through rejoicing. David understood this in one of the darkest moments of his life. His home had been invaded, his family taken and the people around him spoke of turning against him. Yet Scripture says that David strengthened himself in the Lord his God. There are moments when people may care but will not fully understand the weight you are carrying. In such seasons, remind yourself of God’s faithfulness. Speak His promises over your heart. Revisit previous testimonies. Worship before you feel better and rejoice before the situation changes. Encouraging yourself is not pretending that everything is fine. It is refusing to let the situation have the final word over your spirit. Rejoicing is a spiritual discipline, and sometimes you must choose it by limiting voices that feed fear, turning away from conversations that poison your peace and remembering the goodness of God.

Create an environment where joy can live. Fill your heart with God’s Word. Spend time with people who strengthen your faith. Speak words of gratitude, celebrate small progress and thank God for ordinary mercies. A joyful environment is not one without challenges. It is one where challenges are not permitted to become the centre of everything. This is why the enemy attacks joy. If joy is strength, discouragement becomes a strategy to weaken the believer. Do not surrender your joy to people, circumstances, delays or disappointments. Let its source be deeper than the season you are passing through. Guard your heart against constant criticism, comparison, gossip, unresolved offence and endless exposure to negative information. Joy must also be expressed practically through rest, celebration, laughter, generosity and love. As you encourage others, celebrate their progress and become a blessing, joy often grows within you. Joy is both received and released.

QUOTES

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

QUOTES

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
