Malawi Shines Bright: Secures WAFCON 2026 Final Spot With 3-1 Triumph Over Algeria

Malawi defeated Algeria 3-1 in Rabat on Wednesday to advance to the competition’s final on their debut, continuing their incredible run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Chawinga sisters once again led the way as the Scorchers, the lowest-ranked team still in the competition, pulled off another significant upset after defeating African heavyweights Ghana and Nigeria.

Both teams had multiple opportunities during the chaotic game, and two players were sent off in a thrilling first half due to VAR interventions.

Morgane Belkhiter’s red card for denying Malawi captain Tabitha Chawinga a clear chance to score reduced Algeria to ten players.

Then, in the 33rd minute, Tabitha scored the first goal with an incredible overhead kick that hit the crossbar, bounced down, and spun over the line.

Temwa Chawinga’s goal in stoppage time doubled Malawi’s lead and gave the Scorchers a commanding lead before halftime.

Rose Kadzere was also sent off before halftime after a VAR review for a risky studs-up challenge, so their numerical advantage was short-lived.

After halftime, Algeria returned with a renewed sense of purpose, and they were rewarded when Ikram Adjabi scored a goal to give the North Africans hope for a full comeback.

With her second goal of the evening, Tabitha Chawinga dashed those hopes, regaining Malawi’s two-goal lead and guaranteeing their spot in the final on Sunday.
