Flamingos Make History With U-17 World Cup Victory Over Japan

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team has made history, beating Japan 2-1 in the final to claim the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The victory makes the Flamingos the first African side to win the title.
Nigeria took the lead in the 39th minute when Awawu Bashiru found the net.

Oluebube Umejiaku then extended the advantage two minutes into the second half. Japan’s Fuki Ito reduced the deficit late in the match, but the Flamingos defended their lead to secure the trophy.
The win is significant beyond the tournament itself.

Nigeria has become the first African country to capture the FIFA U-17 World Cup in both the men’s and women’s categories. The team also overcame an opening-round setback—a 2-1 defeat to Poland—to go on and lift the title.

The achievement drew praise from the National Sports Commission, which applauded the squad’s resolve and celebrated the result as a major moment for women’s football in Nigeria and across Africa.

President Bola Tinubu had also backed the players ahead of the final, encouraging them to maintain the spirit that carried them past Brazil in the semi-finals.

Coach Akeem Busari had urged his players to remain composed and finish their campaign strongly. They answered that call after defeating Brazil 3-1, following earlier victories over Puerto Rico, North Korea, Mexico and Venezuela.

From an early group-stage loss to a historic final victory, Nigeria’s journey showcased the team’s resilience and determination. The Flamingos return as champions, having delivered a breakthrough achievement for their country and the continent.

What an unforgettable victory! The Flamingos have etched their names in the record books and given the nation another reason to celebrate. Congratulations to the players and coaching staff, you’ve made Nigeria proud and brought the trophy home.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
