Lagos 2027: NDC Candidate Vows Free Education And Healthcare

If elected governor of Lagos State in 2027, Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate Funso Doherty has promised to provide free healthcare and education within the first 100 days of taking office.

Among other things, the governorial candidate promised to provide one “nutritious” meal per day to every student in the state’s public schools.

Doherty made the commitment on Thursday at a unique town hall meeting organized by The Platform, a thought leadership project of The Covenant Nation, Lagos.

In response to a question concerning his plans for his first 100 days in office, he stated that his administration would “make education entirely free, including books and exam fees.”

He pledged to ensure that “education is not denied to any child. Because the children, given our demographics, are the hope of the future and will be the time bomb of the future.

“The other thing that you can expect from us is that there will be truly free healthcare and maternal and child healthcare.”

When asked about his plans to provide housing to the state’s residents, the NDC flagbearer disclosed that his administration would prefer what he termed a “quantum approach.”

He said that rather than providing housing facilities in small units, thousands of housing units would be provided in his first four years in office.

“Now, our plan for housing is not one that delivers 200 units or 300 units. We have a quantum approach to housing. Our commitment is to deliver about 150,000 units in our first, in our first term because a large part of the problem with housing is the fact that supply has not kept up with the demand,” he stated.

As the 2027 election approaches, candidates should be mindful of their promises and clearly explain how they plan to deliver them. Voters deserve practical, achievable commitments—not just campaign slogans. We wish him the very best in his political pursuit.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
