Eleven abducted victims in Ogbido Community, Iyahmo, Edo North, have been freed by the Edo State Police Command.
The victims were kidnapped while working on their farms, according to a statement released on Saturday by Eno Ikoedem, the command’s spokesperson.
According to her, a distress call prompted Iyahmo Division personnel, under the direction of the Divisional Police Officer, to initiate a rescue effort in conjunction with local hunters and vigilantes.
The statement claims that a gunfight broke out between the rescue team and the kidnappers in the nearby forest.
“During the operation, the rescue team encountered the kidnappers, leading to a fierce gun duel. Overwhelmed by the superior firepower and tactical response of the operatives, the kidnappers abandoned their captives and fled into the forest. Consequently, 9 males and two females were rescued unhurt.
“They are Braimah Destiny ‘M’ (46 years), Aruna Idris ‘M’ (38 years), Abudu Sharafadeem ‘M’ (38 years)
Godwin Elizabeth ‘F’ (28 years), James Favour ‘F’ (28 years) and Nonso Ana ‘M’ (30 years).
“Others are Abdulilia Ozigi ‘M’ (26 years), Lambo James ‘M’ (27 years), Wasia Abdul ‘M’ (48 years), Lucky Emmanuel ‘M’ (24 years), and
Suleman Aliyu ‘M’ (25 years),” statement partly read.
Ikoedem stated that attempts were still being made to capture the escaping suspects after the victims were brought to the hospital for a medical examination and subsequently reunited with their families.
In the meantime, Monday Agbonika, the Commissioner of Police, praised the bravery of the police officers, local vigilantes, and hunters whose quick action resulted in the successful rescue.
He urged the public to continue supplying timely and reliable information to support the fight against crime while assuring locals that the command had stepped up operations throughout the region and remained dedicated to ensuring their safety.
