Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, has emerged as the African Democratic Congress’s presidential candidate for the general election of 2027.
Atiku defeated former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the race, according to a statement posted on the party’s official X page on Wednesday night.
“Atiku defeats Amaechi, Hayatudeen to secure ADC Presidential Ticket.
“Final result: Atiku 1,855,787, Amaechi 509,397, Hayatudeen 180,903. Total votes cast in the election: 2,546,457. Total party membership for the election: 3,113,599. Congratulations to Waziri Atiku,” the statement added.
A breakdown of the results shows that Atiku won by a wide margin of 1,346,390 votes over Amaechi, who came second, while he defeated Hayatu-Deen by 1,674,884 votes.
On Monday, May 25, 2026, members from all 36 states as well as the Federal Capital Territory participated in the African Democratic Congress’s presidential primary.
After its three main candidates allegedly turned down requests to resign in favor of a consensus candidate, the party decided to use the direct primary method.
Party leaders stated that the direct primary route was chosen in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026, despite the initial consideration of an affirmation process.
Congratulations to Atiku on his victory in the ADC presidential primary. I also hope that Amaechi Hayatu-Deen will accept the results in good faith and work together to move the party and the nation forward. Unity and sportsmanship are essential for a stronger Nigeria.
