In response to concerns raised by Nigerians and other stakeholders regarding its accessibility, the Independent National Electoral Commission has made the decision to make the preliminary voter register for the 2027 general elections available online.
The register was physically displayed at registration locations across the country from October 9 to October 15, according to the commission’s announcement on Monday.
Mohammed Haruna, the chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, stated in a statement that the action was intended to increase openness, accessibility, and public trust in the electoral process.
“Accordingly, and in furtherance of its commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process, the Commission has decided to make available on its online platform https://display.inecnigeria.org the same Preliminary Register of Voters earlier displayed at the Registration Areas.”
“The Commission continues to process claims and objections arising from the exercise in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2026, preparatory to the certification and publication of the Final Register of Voters on 15th December 2026.
“The Commission appreciates the continued interest and constructive engagement of Nigerians and stakeholders and reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability and the faithful implementation of the Electoral Act, 2026, in delivering credible elections.”
I welcome this new development by INEC as a positive step toward greater transparency and public trust in the electoral process. Making the preliminary voters’ register available online also gives voters an easier way to check their details and take part in the registration process. Overall, it’s a commendable initiative that can help make elections more accessible and credible.
