VFS Global Clarifies Visa Role, Unveils Measures To Combat Visa Fraud

VFS Global clarifies it does not decide visa outcomes and unveils new safeguards to combat visa fraud and scams.

VFS Global has reiterated it plays no role in deciding whether visa applications are approved or rejected, while unveiling a range of anti-fraud measures designed to protect applicants from scams and ensure transparency in the visa application process.

The global visa outsourcing company in a media parley recently held at its Ikeja office, said its responsibilities are limited to administrative functions, including visa application intake, biometric collection and document handling, while sovereign governments retain exclusive authority over visa assessments, approvals, refusals, appointment availability and processing timelines.

Chief Operating Officer for the Middle East and Africa at VFS Global, Siddharth Mehra, made the clarification amid growing public interest in visa processing and the role of private service providers as international travel demand continues to rise.

According to him, “VFS Global operates under strict oversight on behalf of 71 client governments across more than 160 countries, with its operations subjected to over 10,000 audits and assessments annually by internal teams, external bodies and government-appointed agencies.”

Mehra said the company’s “contracts are awarded only after rigorous competitive tender processes lasting between 12 and 18 months, during which governments assess compliance standards, security systems, operational resilience and financial strength.”

Addressing concerns over value-added services offered at visa application centres, Mehra stressed that premium services such as priority lounges and document assistance are entirely optional and are designed solely to improve applicants’ convenience.
“These services are developed in consultation with, approved by, and monitored by client governments,” he said.
He explained that applicants are clearly informed through online platforms and at visa application centres that purchasing optional services does not improve the chances of obtaining a visa or reduce government processing times.
According to him, “pricing for such services is approved by client governments and transparently communicated, while the company maintains a zero-tolerance policy against coercion or any form of misrepresentation.”
Mehra also dismissed claims that applicants could gain an advantage through so-called “premium appointments,” insisting that no paid service influences visa decisions.
He noted that appointment booking systems are protected by multiple security features, including One-Time Password (OTP) authentication and CAPTCHA verification, to ensure fair access for all applicants.
Where fraudulent activities are detected, he said the company collaborates closely with governments and law enforcement agencies while running awareness campaigns such as #DoNotFallForFraud to educate travelers on avoiding scams.
Highlighting the company’s governance framework, Mehra said “VFS Global has implemented comprehensive anti-bribery measures, mandatory employee background checks and a whistleblower hotline for reporting unethical conduct.”
He added that all allegations of misconduct are investigated thoroughly, with appropriate disciplinary action taken where necessary.
On data protection, Mehra said the company complies with stringent global and local privacy regulations, including alignment with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), while adhering to government-mandated protocols for data storage, retention and deletion.
He said regular compliance audits are conducted to safeguard sensitive applicant information.
The company also maintained that outsourcing administrative visa functions enables diplomatic missions to focus on security screening and decision-making, while technology-driven processes improve efficiency in handling growing application volumes.
According to Mehra, “VFS Global has processed more than 547 million visa applications worldwide since 2001,” reflecting increasing demand for international travel and governments’ confidence in its services.
Reaffirming the company’s commitment to transparency and ethical conduct, Mehra said VFS Global would continue to prioritise responsible technology, robust security standards and clear communication with applicants.
“For over two decades, we have supported governments in delivering secure and efficient visa services at scale,” he said, adding that the company’s continued growth reflects the trust placed in it by governments operating under some of the world’s strictest regulatory frameworks.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
