Uzor Arukwe on the Demands Women Face in Marriage

Speaking about the responsibilities of women in marriages, Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe revealed that he is not a big supporter of marriage.

Speaking in an interview, the actor asserted that having children and adopting their husbands’ last names are just two of the many adjustments and sacrifices that women undergo in marriage.

Arukwe added that he thinks women are more responsible than men, especially when it comes to childbirth and family expectations.

“I’ve never really been an advocate of marriage, because I feel like it’s more tasking for the woman. She’s the one that bears the child. She takes your last name. A lot of things happen. Growing up, you’re 25, you’re not married. What’s happening? At this age, I already have five children. I feel like now, there are women who don’t want to even have children. I’ve met at least two or three,” he stated.

In many marriages, women take on a wide range of responsibilities to keep the family and relationship going. Even when things are difficult, they may be the ones praying, fasting, caring for others, teaching, and trying to hold everything together. In that sense, Uzor Arukwe’s point resonates: marriage can place an especially heavy and demanding burden on women.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

QUOTES

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
