Uruguay Snatch Late Draw Against Saudi Arabia in World Cup Opener

Uruguay’s Maxi Araujo denied Saudi Arabia a memorable opening-match victory with a late equaliser.

Uruguay fought back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in their opening Group H match, with Maxi Araujo scoring a late equaliser to deny the Saudis a famous victory.

Saudi Arabia appeared on set for another memorable World Cup upset when Abdulelah Al Amri slotted home four minutes before half-time after Uruguay goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera saved Hassan Al Tambakti’s powerful header from a corner.

However, Marcelo Bielsa’s side responded strongly after the break, dominating proceedings and launching waves of attacks. The South Americans finished with 28 shots and nearly equalised earlier when Mohammed Al Owais tipped Manuel Ugarte’s low effort onto the post.

Uruguay eventually found a breakthrough in the 80th minute as Araujo reacted quickest after Al Owais pushed Federico Vinas’ header into his path, firing home the leveller.

Al Owais remained Saudi Arabia’s standout performer, producing nine saves, including a crucial late stop to deny Federico Valverde in stoppage time and preserve a point.

The result leaves Group H finely balanced following Cape Verde’s surprise draw against Spain, while Saudi Arabia continue their bid to reach the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since 1994.
