Tonto Dikeh, a Nollywood actress, has cautioned against letting public opinion dictate one’s worth and path in life, referring to it as a “thief of destinies.”
In a social media post, Dikeh asserted that many people prioritize acceptance over purpose, which leads them to put off or abandon their objectives.
She made the point that those who are always looking for approval are more vulnerable to criticism anxiety and social pressure.
Dikeh wrote: “Public Validation: The Thief of Destinies. Public validation becomes dangerous when people allow the opinions, applause, or approval of others to determine their worth and direction in life. Many destinies have been delayed, diverted, or destroyed because individuals chose acceptance over purpose.
“When a person constantly seeks validation, they become vulnerable to societal pressure, fear of criticism, and the need to impress others. Instead of pursuing their God-given vision, they begin to live according to expectations and trends. Dreams are abandoned, talents are hidden, and opportunities are missed because of the desire to be approved by the crowd.
“True fulfillment comes from knowing who you are and staying committed to your purpose, even when others do not understand or applaud your journey. Public opinion is temporary, but destiny is permanent. Those who achieve greatness are often those who learn to value purpose above popularity and conviction above validation.
“Never let the applause or criticism of people become louder than the voice of your purpose”.
Seeking validation refers to the human desire for approval, recognition, and affirmation from others. It involves looking outside oneself for reassurance that one’s actions, choices, or worth are accepted and valued. While seeking validation can sometimes boost confidence and foster connections, excessive reliance on external approval may lead to dependence, loss of self-identity, and emotional vulnerability. Ultimately, true self-worth comes from within, and understanding this balance is key to maintaining mental and emotional well-being.
