Titi Atiku Expresses Concern About Nigerian Girls Going Overseas

According to Chief Titi Atiku Abubakar, the wife of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, some Nigerian girls are now a problem abroad.

During the presentation of a review of the 2025 US trafficking report by NACTAL, a network that combats child trafficking, abuse, and labor, she made the statement in Abuja on Thursday.

International partners are supporting Nigeria’s anti-trafficking efforts, she said, in part because of this.

Instead of leaving and becoming a burden overseas, they want girls to stay at home and start their own lives.

She went on to say that the partners also provide direct support.

She added that NACTAL needs the support of numerous civil society organizations in order to combat human trafficking.

Approximately 286 of them are used by the network.

The immediate former president of NACTAL, Abdulganiu Abubakar, claimed that the Nigerian government, development partners, and civil society organizations did not receive enough credit in the U.S. report.

He claimed that ten NAPTIP shelters had been renovated with partner assistance, but this was not mentioned in the report.

He acknowledged that the nation still has issues.

Political will is lacking, funding is inadequate, and high-profile cases are frequently handled poorly.

He called on the government to increase funding for anti-trafficking organizations.

Osita Osemene, the new president of NACTAL, intends to expand the network from roughly 286 groups to 500 in three months.

Nigerian girls are encouraged to think carefully before travelling abroad. Don’t rush into a journey without valid documents, a trustworthy sponsor, and a clear understanding of where you’re going and what awaits you. Your safety comes first—verify every detail, ask questions, and never let the promise of a better life cloud your judgment.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
