Shocking Discovery: Fake Dollar Factory Found In Ondo
In the state’s Odigbo Local Government Area, Ondo State police have discovered what appears to be a facility used to make fake US dollars. One person was arrested in connection with the operation.
The suspect, Peter Desmond, was apprehended at a property in Kiniso Village, near Ajue, where officers also seized three bags of suspected fake dollar bills and other items believed to be linked to the illegal business.
The development was announced by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, in a statement released on Tuesday.
Jimoh said the breakthrough followed a fraud complaint submitted by Yusuf Nasiru, a resident of Sabo, Okitipupa, on October 28, 2026.
Nasiru told investigators that two men, identified as Desmond and Olami Toro, came to his shop on October 25 to exchange US currency for naira. He said he handed them $6,000—estimated at about ₦8.6 million—but they later returned the dollars, saying they had been unable to secure enough naira to complete the transaction.
Nasiru reportedly discovered the notes were counterfeit after the men left and then reported the matter to police.
According to Jimoh, detectives from the Okitipupa Divisional Police Headquarters launched an investigation.
Using intelligence and technical surveillance, they traced Desmond to a location suspected of being connected to the alleged counterfeiting operation.
Police raided the site on October 29. Several people reportedly fled by climbing over the perimeter fence.
During a search of the premises, officers seized three bags of suspected fake US dollars and a small wooden box. The items were taken for further examination.
Police said Desmond was still in custody and assisting investigators as they worked to establish more details about the suspected operation.
Nigeria continues to grapple with different forms of crime, including the alleged production of counterfeit foreign currency. Such schemes can harm individuals and undermine trust in legitimate business. Why do some people pursue wealth through deception instead of honest work? Must money be obtained through dubious means?
This case should serve as a warning. If those accused are found guilty, they should face appropriate penalties under the law. Accountability and fair enforcement can help deter others from engaging in similar crimes.
