Rita Edochie, a veteran of Nollywood, has spoken out about what she calls “double gender standards in relationships and marriages.”
The actress responded to a video of the pastor speaking to a couple at a marriage-related event on her Instagram page.
In the video, the pastor warned a woman that she would be caught and returned to her father’s home if she cheated while her husband was away for several months. He did, however, add that God would pardon him if he cheated on his wife.
“I am very angry this morning, and I pray this is just a joke and content. Look, if men can be excused because they are ‘polygamous by nature,’ then women deserve the same grace, the same mercy and the same forgiveness. Enough of this gender inequality!. If infidelity is a sin, then it is a sin for both. If forgiveness exists, then it should not be reserved for one gender. Justice that favours men while crushing women is not justice; it is witchcraft.”
It is disheartening to see women often bearing the brunt of such issues, raising questions about fairness and gender equality. Is the pastor implying that only women are expected to remain faithful while men are excused?
Such a stance perpetuates harmful stereotypes and unfair expectations. Instead, the message should be clear: fidelity is a mutual responsibility for both men and women.
Cheating should never be justified or tolerated for either gender; promoting accountability and respect for both partners is essential for healthy relationships.
