Malawi is ranked 153rd in the world, 116 spots lower than Nigeria, the record 10-time champions and pre-WAFCON favorites, who were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The only other nations to win WAFCON since its inception in 1998, aside from Nigeria, were Equatorial Guinea twice and South Africa once.
