NAF Launches Air Surveillance To Rescue Abducted Oyo School Children

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has persisted in supporting ongoing efforts to rescue teachers and students kidnapped from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, with aerial surveillance.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde revealed this during a courtesy visit on June 5, 2026, by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh, according to a statement from NAF spokesman Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.

According to the statement, Makinde disclosed that as soon as the kidnapping was reported, the NAF quickly set up an aerial surveillance platform, supplying vital information to aid in search and rescue efforts.

“He commended the CAS and the NAF for their swift response and sustained support, noting that the Air Force made the surveillance platform available while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets are still being assembled at the NAF Base, Lagos.

“Makinde further explained that the state acquired the platforms following consultations with the NAF to ensure access to maintenance support, engineering expertise and pilot training.

“He expressed confidence that the assets would significantly enhance security operations across Oyo State and neighbouring states once fully operational,” the statement released on Sunday partly read.

“The NAF remains committed to working closely with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to safeguard lives and property while supporting efforts to address security challenges across the country.”

The pupils and teachers of the Baptist Nursery and Primary School (Yawota), Community Grammar School (Esiele), and L.A. Primary School were kidnapped on May 15 during a fatal attack by bandits.

One of the teachers was also killed in captivity by the terrorists.

This situation underscores the urgent need for swift and sustained action to ensure the safety of our children and educators. While surveillance and military efforts are crucial, they must be complemented by stronger security measures, community engagement, and proactive strategies to prevent future incidents. It is imperative that we move beyond reactive responses and prioritize comprehensive actions to protect our schools and restore peace of mind for families and communities alike.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
