Insights From Mariam Oyakhilome On The Downsides Of Hiring People She Knows

Influencer and well-known content creator Mariam Oyakhilome talked about how she hired a family friend to serve as her personal assistant (PA) and how that relationship ultimately ended.

In a post on her Instagram page, Mariam clarified that she was first reluctant to hire the woman because she prefers to collaborate with strangers.

She said;

“This is why I don’t like employing people I know. One of my family friends reached out and said she wanted to do the job. I said no, I cannot employ you because I know you.

‘I want somebody I don’t know, so that I can hold them accountable. I spoke to my dad, and he told me to employ her so she could support herself. So, I put her on a ₦150,000 salary.

“I give her food, then I still pay her ₦250K. Now the mother is calling me to support them and pay her school fees. If na una, una go pay that kind thing? No be see finish be that one?”

In my view, involving family and friends in employment can be a double-edged sword. While some may be genuinely committed and take their work seriously, others tend to behave carelessly or take their roles for granted. I know a pastor who prefers hiring outsiders rather than church members because he feels that outsiders are more likely to respect the job and follow instructions diligently. Ultimately, some individuals are spoiled by familiarity, making it difficult to expect professionalism from loved ones. On the other hand, hiring outsiders can bring a sense of objectivity and accountability, ensuring that tasks are completed as expected. It’s a delicate balance, but for many, engaging external personnel might lead to better work ethic and professionalism.
