Fresh Ebola Screening Advisory Issued In Nigeria

The Federal Government has directed security agencies, health authorities and other relevant bodies to strengthen monitoring at the country’s entry points after reports of lapses in Ebola screening procedures.

The order comes amid heightened concern following confirmation of an imported Ebola case in Abuja. The Office of the National Security Adviser reportedly raised concerns about failures to follow approved entry protocols, while the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare instructed agencies to record and report any actual or attempted violations.

A review by our correspondents across several states points to wider preparedness challenges, including limited public awareness, inadequate infection-control facilities and gaps in emergency planning. These concerns persist even as state governments say they have stepped up surveillance.

In Lagos, the Punch reports that an isolation centre in Yaba—previously used to treat COVID-19 and other infectious diseases—has been converted for use as a nursing school.

Elsewhere, some states are still working to obtain protective equipment, while markets, transport hubs and other busy public areas lack basic handwashing facilities. The Federal Government has also said that 15 states have yet to update their Ebola preparedness and response plans.

As authorities strengthen their response, the public should remain vigilant and follow official health guidance. Everyone can help reduce the risk of infection by washing their hands thoroughly and regularly, maintaining good personal hygiene, and taking any other recommended precautions.
