FIFA, Spain Crop Trump Out Of World Cup Trophy Photos As White House Hits Back
FIFA and Spain removed US President, Donald Trump from their official social media images of Spain’s World Cup trophy celebrations before the White House responded by posting its own photos and video highlighting his presence on the podium.
Trump presented the medals and World Cup trophy after Spain defeated Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the final. He remained on stage as the Spanish players lifted the trophy before FIFA President, Gianni Infantino guided him away so the team could celebrate, with several photographs capturing Trump alongside the newly crowned champions.
Spain later shared edited images of the trophy lift with Trump removed. FIFA also published cropped versions of the celebration, which excluded both Trump and Infantino, according to The Mirror US.
The White House quickly responded by releasing multiple images and an Instagram video showing Trump celebrating with the Spanish players. Two of the photos focused solely on the US president.
It was the second time in a year that Trump had presented a major football trophy at the same stadium, having also handed Chelsea the Club World Cup trophy 12 months earlier.
His extended stay on the podium drew attention from broadcasters and commentators, while boos were heard as he walked onto the field before the presentation ceremony. Despite that reception, several Spain players appeared to enjoy the moment, with some performing the “Trump dance” while he stood alongside them.
Speaking after the final, Trump praised the champions and the tournament.
“They both played well. I would say Spain played better. It was very exciting. It looked like Spain dominated, but it was a very close match,” he said.
He also hailed the tournament’s success, adding: “The World Cup is one of the greatest events of any kind. We are really happy it did so well. People have come from all over the world and loved our country. We have showed our country in a different light and it was a great thing.”
