Duke Promises Cheaper Fuel, Targets N300 Per Litre

Donald Duke, a former governor of Cross River State and presidential candidate for the Peoples Redemption Party, has pledged to lower gas prices to roughly N300 per liter if he is elected in 2027.

He claimed that this would be accomplished by altering the cost of petroleum products for local consumption.

He contends that Nigerians shouldn’t pay foreign market prices for domestic crude oil.

Duke discussed President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies and shared his own strategy for the petroleum industry in an online interview on Wednesday.

He called the current subsidy system a scam and said it was unsustainable.

Duke contended that the cost of producing and refining petroleum for domestic use is significantly lower than what the global price indicates.

Nigerians are forced to pay more than $100 for it, even though he estimated the production cost to be around $45, or roughly $30 without some fees.

He claimed that Nigerians’ lives have become more difficult due to the high cost of gasoline, particularly for workers and low-income families whose earnings are consumed by energy and transportation expenses.

He pointed out that a worker’s salary could cover the cost of filling a single fuel tank, and the minimum wage is 70,000 naira.

Duke stated that he would aim for roughly N300 per liter when asked how much Nigerians should expect to pay under his administration.

While the promise of petrol at N300 per litre sounds appealing, many Nigerians may wonder whether it is achievable in today’s economic climate. As different candidates make promises ahead of the 2027 election, the real question is: who will deliver on their pledges if elected president? Only time will tell.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
