China Accuses US of Interfering In Argentina-Huawei Business Cooperation
China has accused the United States of interfering in business cooperation between Argentina and Chinese technology company Huawei, alleging that Washington used visa restrictions to obstruct legitimate commercial activities and undermine Argentina’s sovereignty.
In a statement released late Wednesday, China’s embassy in Argentina claimed the US embassy had promoted what it described as the “China threat theory” while expanding national security concerns to justify visa revocations that disrupted cooperation between Huawei and an Argentine company.
The embassy said the measures represented an unjustified attempt to interfere in normal business relations, arguing that they violated the principles of free-market competition and infringed on Argentina’s sovereign right to determine its own commercial partnerships.
The accusations come as geopolitical competition between Washington and Beijing intensifies across Latin America. The administration of US President Donald Trump, a close ally of Argentine President Javier Milei, has repeatedly expressed concern over China’s expanding economic and technological presence in the region, including in Argentina, where Beijing is the country’s second-largest trading partner.
The dispute also follows the recent renewal of a five-year currency swap agreement between the central banks of China and Argentina valued at 130 billion yuan, or approximately $19.3 billion, underscoring the strengthening economic relationship between the two nations.
The US embassy in Argentina had not responded to the allegations at the time of publication, leaving Beijing’s claims unanswered as strategic competition between the world’s two largest economies continues to influence diplomatic and commercial relations across Latin America.
