Amad’s Late Strike Lifts Ivory Coast Over Ecuador For Africa’s First 2026 World Cup Win

Amad Diallo’s stoppage-time winner handed Ivory Coast victory and ended Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten run to get Africa’s first 2026 World Cup win.

Amad Diallo scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner as Ivory Coast opened their FIFA World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador, ending the South Americans’ 19-match unbeaten run.

Diallo, introduced from the bench after being left out of the starting lineup, produced the decisive moment when he guided the ball into the bottom corner following a powerful run by Wilfried Singo. The late strike gave Ivory Coast a valuable three points in Group E and strengthened their hopes of reaching the knockout stages for the first time.

Ecuador came close on several occasions but were denied by the crossbar three times. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar in the first half, while veteran forward Enner Valencia hit the post from a tight angle after the break.

Despite Ecuador’s pressure, clear chances were limited. Their first shot on target arrived in the 68th minute when Gonzalo Plata forced goalkeeper Yahia Fofana into a save.

Ivory Coast also threatened, with Elye Wahi hitting the crossbar early in the second half. Ecuador’s defense, which had recorded 12 clean sheets in 19 matches under coach Sebastian Beccacece, appeared set to frustrate the Ivorians before Diallo’s late intervention settled the contest.

The victory leaves Ivory Coast well placed in a group that also includes Germany and Curacao.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
