UNN Celebrates Milestone: 168 First-Class Graduates Among 12,895 Convocation Attendees

During the University of Nigeria, Nsukka’s (UNN) 55th Convocation Ceremony, 168 students received First Class Honors.

At a press conference on Wednesday at the university’s Enugu Campus, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya announced that 12,895 students would be attending the convocation, with the theme being “The Renaissance of Mind and the Rebuilding of the Lion’s Den.”

Ortuanya provided a breakdown of the graduating students, stating that 2,944 postgraduate students would receive higher degrees, including 1,390 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, 1,340 Master’s degrees, and 214 Postgraduate Diplomas, while 10,641 would receive first degrees and diplomas, including 168 First Class graduates.

Additionally, he revealed that after being accredited by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the university’s MBBS admission quota increased from 180 to 400 students, while the dentistry quota increased from 15 to 60 students.

He also mentioned that the Department of Mass Communication was unbundled into five specialized degree programs by the National Universities Commission (NUC), and four new programs—Agribusiness, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Industrial Arts, and Criminology and Security Studies—were fully accredited.

Ortuanya went on to announce the creation of the university’s Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Laboratory, characterizing it as a calculated move to equip students for the digital economy.

He reaffirmed UNN’s commitment to reconstructing the organization in accordance with the vision of its founders and establishing it as a globally competitive university that can produce graduates prepared to tackle today’s domestic and international issues.
