The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported on Saturday that a suspected vandal was discovered crushed to death beneath a collapsed transmission tower along the 330kV Ughelli-Benin line in Delta State.
According to a statement from the company, TCN linesmen found the body during a thorough line patrol carried out by the Delta Sub-Region Lines Maintenance Department after the line tripped on an earth fault.
The victim’s body was discovered crushed between the tower members, and the patrol team identified Tower 101 as the cause of the collapse.
Tower 101 on the nearby Ughelli-Sapele 330kV transmission line had also been severely vandalized, according to TCN, although it was still standing at the time of the report.
TCN denounced the vandalism and urged the public and host communities to exercise caution and to notify security services or the closest TCN office of any suspicious activity near power installations.
The company warned that acts of infrastructure vandalism endanger lives, cause power outages, and damage national assets, and that combating it requires teamwork.
I truly cannot understand why some Nigerians choose to risk their own lives out of greed. It seems that poverty and lack of opportunities drive people to make such dangerous decisions, putting themselves and others in harm’s way. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need for economic development and social support to steer people away from these destructive paths.
