President Bola Tinubu has described how he earned money for his education in the US by working as a taxi driver and doing other jobs.
The President claimed that the experience had influenced his resolve to increase Nigerian children’s access to education.
On Wednesday, he revealed this in a post on his 𝕏 handle.
He said;
“When I first arrived in the United States as a young man, I drove a taxi to earn money for my education. I even had to postpone starting school for several months to save enough.
“When I eventually got to Chicago, I worked different jobs to support myself and pay my way through university. I know what it means to worry about tuition, accommodation and how to make ends meet while pursuing an education.
“A four-year course must take four years. Our young people deserve to complete their education on time and get on with their lives.
According to the President, nursing enrollment has increased from 28,000 to 115,000 annually, and ₦110 billion is being invested in the rehabilitation of 24 medical schools.
The number of students admitted to medical and dental programs has risen from 5,000 to 12,000, he continued.
Tinubu added that his administration was funding teacher preparation, education for girls, and a new curriculum that reintroduces Nigerian history, and that more than a million out-of-school children had returned to classrooms.
He praised Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, and their team for carrying out the reforms.
The President encouraged Nigerians to report problems in their communities and investigate the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative via an interactive platform created by the ministry.
“The circumstances of a child’s birth should never determine the limits of their ambition. Our responsibility is to give every Nigerian child a fair chance to fulfil their potential.
“We have more work to do, and I am determined to see it through,” Tinubu said.
Like Tinubu, many people have stories about the hard work and sacrifices that helped them climb the ladder of success. By listening to their experiences, we can learn a thing or two to inspire and guide us on our own journeys.
