Tinubu Celebrates Babangida At 85, Hails His Contributions To Nigeria

President Tinubu celebrates Babangida at 85, praising his leadership, infrastructure legacy and enduring contributions to Nigeria’s national development.

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on his 85th birthday, describing him as an outstanding leader whose legacy remains significant in Nigeria’s history.

In a statement posted on the official handle of his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Babangida’s military career and his leadership of the country following the 1985 coup.

The President said: “Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape.”

According to Tinubu, Babangida expanded Nigeria’s economy, developed critical infrastructure and established several agencies and institutions that continue to serve the national interest.

He said: “He expanded the nation’s economy, established lasting infrastructure, and created several agencies and institutions that continue to serve the national interest. But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today.”

Tinubu said Babangida’s contributions to national development had secured him an enduring place in Nigeria’s history.

The President also commended the former military leader for continuing to provide guidance and counsel despite his retirement from public office.

He said: “Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation. His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations.”

Tinubu wished the former military President continued good health, strength and longevity.

“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” the President said.

Babangida served as Nigeria’s military President from 1985 to 1993, after taking power in a military coup that ousted Major General Muhammadu Buhari.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
