Sunday Igboho, an activist for the Yoruba nation, has cautioned that any governor who tries to depose Olubadan of Ibadanland will encounter fierce opposition.
Speaking to a crowd, Igboho stated unequivocally that he would not tolerate any attempt to overthrow the traditional ruler, cautioning that doing so might cause extensive unrest throughout Oyo State.
He added that the state could declare a state of emergency on the same day the governor made such an attempt, and that the repercussions would be immediate.
He said;
“Any governor who attempts to remove Olubadan, we will disrupt everywhere, and they will declare a state of emergency in Oyo State that same day”.
The warning follows a previous controversy in Oyo State over claims that Governor Seyi Makinde intended to remove Oba Rashidi Ladoja from his position as Ibadanland’s Olubadan. Ladoja denied allegations of a plot against him, and the governor’s administration rejected the accusation. Later, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes declared that communication had been used to settle the disputes between the monarch and the governor.
Personally, I see no reason for Olubadan to be removed, especially since he was duly elected. Those considering such a move should proceed with caution and respect the process. Sunday Igboho’s warning should not be taken lightly. To help prevent unrest in Ibadan and across Oyo State, all parties should leave the Olubadan in place and seek a peaceful resolution.
