Six Years On, #EndSARS Hopes Remain Unfulfilled, Mr Macaroni Says

Six years after the #EndSARS protests, skit creator and actor Mr. Macaroni has criticized Nigeria’s poverty, corruption, and insecurity.

In an X post on Tuesday, the content creator honored Nigerians who died in protests against extrajudicial executions and police brutality on October 20, 2020.

He voiced worry about the nation’s deteriorating problems and widening rifts among its citizens.

In addition, Macaroni questioned Nigerians’ sense of national identity and expressed his hope that they would eventually recognize their own power.

“6 Years Later! We are still dealing with insecurity, hunger, poverty, lack of proper health care and the highest level of corruption and impunity. The saddest part is that we are even more divided as a people at a time when we should be most united,” he wrote.

“I hope one day we truly realize the power that we have as citizens and stop allowing a few selfish individuals destroy the success and prosperity of the majority of us.”

Nine people were confirmed dead and four more were listed as missing and presumed dead in the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry’s report on the Lekki incident on October 20, 2020.

Victor Sunday Ibanga, Abuta Solomon, Jide, Olalekan Abideen Ashafa, Olamilekan Ajasa, Kolade Salami, Folorunsho Olabisi, Kenechukwu Ugoh, and Nathaniel Solomon are among the nine people listed as deceased.

Abiodun Adesanya, Ifeanyi Nicholas Eji, Tola, and Wisdom were the four people listed as missing and thought to be dead.

Six years have gone by just like that. Mr. Macaroni truly did his best to speak up about the #EndSARS struggle, and he deserves credit for his efforts. To everyone who lost their lives during the protests, may they rest in perfect peace.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

QUOTES

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
