Shocking Twist: Father-in-Law Locks Widow Out Of Deceased Husband’s Home Days After His Death

A man has been detained by the Lagos State Police Command on charges of intimidation, physical assault, and threats against his daughter-in-law, who lost her husband a few days ago.

The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday by the Lagos State Domestic and S*xual Violence Agency (DSVA) in response to a widely shared video that showed Tosin a 28-year-old woman, screaming and claiming to be being attacked.

The widow was heard begging someone in the room to stop dragging her phone, which she later claimed was smashed on the floor, in the video.

“You are inconveniencing me. I will not allow anyone to go on the errand. Leave me alone. Hammed, you did not do well. Death caused all of these things. See the way I am being beaten,” she said.

A male voice was also heard in the background saying, “you will leave this house”.

On July 20, Tosin lost her husband in Lagos’ Ikorodu neighborhood. Family members allegedly tried to evict her from her husband’s house a few days after his passing.

Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu said the widow and her two sons were told to move into a single room when the father-in-law and brother-in-law moved into the apartment. Gwamnishu further claimed that the family had tried to sell the deceased’s car and shared some of his possessions.

The DSVA said in a statement on X that the widow’s allegations of intimidation, physical assault, and threats were supported by its preliminary findings.

“The agency successfully established contact with the survivor, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical assault, and intimidation following the recent death of her husband,” the statement reads.

“As part of its intervention, the Agency commenced engagement with the investigating police officers handling the case. Preliminary feedback from the Police confirms that the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations continue.”

“We appreciate concerned members of the public and partner organisations whose vigilance and prompt reporting continue to strengthen the State’s response to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence,” the agency said.

Why would the father-in-law lock the house and cast the wife and children out onto the street? What could the wife have done to deserve such harsh treatment from her in-laws? Regardless of any issues they may have with her, they should have considered the well-being of the children of the deceased, showing compassion for the wife who just lost her husband and the kids who have just lost their father. Or could it be that the father-in-law harbors a secret grudge against the wife? There are many questions left unanswered. Stay tuned to LNreporters as we continue to uncover the truth and bring you updates on this troubling story.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
