Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Francis Duru has been lost to the cold hands of death at the age of 57
His family announced his death in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, through a statement on his official Instagram page, confirming that he died following a brief illness.
The post by the family reads:
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
Duru’s death comes months after he publicly rejected reports that he was battling a life-threatening illness.
In June, a video showing the actor looking frail had triggered concern online, leading to speculation about his health.
The actor subsequently responded through an Instagram video, describing the circulating footage as “fabricated and malicious”.
Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State
After completing his primary and secondary education in Cameroon, he moved to Nigeria for his university education.
He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.
His acting journey began in 1989 when he featured in Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko.
He later became widely known for his role as Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the 1995 action-comedy produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
Throughout his career, Duru received several honours for his contribution to the Nigerian film industry.
He was also recognised as a United Nations ambassador of peace because of his influence on young people.
In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) category at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his role in Mboputa.
Duru married Adokiye in 2003, and their marriage produced four children. The family experienced a major loss in August 2024 following the death of their child, Ifeanyi.
