The Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate for 2027, Peter Obi, has expressed concern about his safety and the persistent dissatisfaction of his companies, saying he “might not even be alive” to run in the next election.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo on With Chude, which was posted on X on Wednesday, Obi painted a bleak picture of the difficulties opposition figures in Nigeria face.

“Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive.”

“But I said, ‘Look at the cars of other people.’ And you could see them talking to each other, as if, ‘Who is this one?’” he said.

Obi also claimed, that acquaintances now avoid him in public out of fear of retribution revealing some supporters have quietly asked him to skip their family milestones.

“I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is wedding, but please don’t come,’” he said.

Peter Obi’s candid revelation underscores the importance of respecting his humanity and emotional well-being. He should not be pushed into depression or frustration because of political pressures. Every individual has the right to aspire and contest for a position without fear of intimidation or undue stress.

Politics should be a platform for healthy competition and growth, not a do-or-die affair that endangers the mental health of those involved. Let us promote a respectful and supportive environment for all aspirants and uphold the dignity of democratic processes.
