Ojukwu Joins Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group As Vice-Chair

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) has named Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, Minister of Foreign Affairs, as its Vice-Chair.

On the fringes of the current 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2026) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, CMAG held a high-level meeting where the appointment was made public.

Nigeria now holds a significant leadership position in the Commonwealth organization, which is responsible for defending democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law among its 56 member states, thanks to this diplomatic achievement.

Currently led by H.E. Chris Fearne of Malta, CMAG is a rotating panel of foreign ministers tasked with keeping an eye on adherence to the fundamental political principles of the Commonwealth. The organization, which was founded in 1995 as part of the Millbrook Commonwealth Action Plan, is the main means of dealing with major or ongoing violations of democratic norms among its member countries.

CMAG was first established in 2011 to address military takeovers and unconstitutional government overthrows. These days, the group actively tackles issues like judicial meddling, executive overreach, electoral irregularities, limitations on political participation, and violations of press freedom.

Congratulations to Bianca Ojukwu on her appointment as vice-chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group. We wish her every success as she takes on this important role and contributes to the group’s work.

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

QUOTES

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
