Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, welcomed President Wadagni as he arrived early on Monday. He then escorted the Beninese leader into the meeting with President Tinubu. The two leaders met behind closed doors for around half an hour. Although specifics of their conversations were not immediately disclosed, it is believed that bilateral relations and regional cooperation were the main topics of discussion.
After winning the nation’s presidential election on April 12, 2026, President Wadagni took office on May 24, 2026, replacing former President Patrice Talon. Vice President Kashim Shettima was earlier assigned by President Tinubu to represent Nigeria at Wadagni’s inauguration ceremony last weekend in Cotonou. The Republic of Benin continues to be an important economic and security partner in the West African subregion, sharing its eastern border with Nigeria’s western boundary.
We warmly welcome President Wadagni to Nigeria and extend our best wishes for a productive and amicable discussion. May the talks foster stronger bilateral relations and mutual understanding. Wishing the Beninese president a successful visit and a peaceful, fruitful dialogue.
