Nigerian Military Rescues Wife of Late Ex-Defence Spokesman After Weeks in Bandits’ Captivity
The Nigerian military has successfully rescued Mrs. Amina Abubakar, wife of the late former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar, after weeks in captivity following their abduction by armed bandits in Katsina State.
The Defence Headquarters announced the development on Monday, stating that the rescue was achieved through sustained search-and-rescue operations carried out by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA with support from the Nigerian Air Force.
According to military authorities, intensified offensive operations against criminal groups operating in the area led troops to Tunga Village, where they established contact with the kidnappers during ongoing rescue efforts.
Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the sustained pressure mounted on the criminal elements forced them to retreat, resulting in Mrs. Abubakar’s recovery.
“The rescue operation followed intensified search-and-rescue efforts conducted by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA. During sustained offensive operations and pressure mounted on the criminal elements, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga Village, leading to the successful recovery of Mrs. Abubakar,” he stated.
Military authorities disclosed that during the encounter, the bandits injured Mrs. Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing as troops advanced.
Following the rescue, she was immediately evacuated to a military medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding positively, according to officials.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria assured the public that all necessary support is being provided to aid her recovery and assist her family during this difficult period.
Military authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to tracking down those responsible for the abduction and intensifying operations against criminal networks threatening communities across the country.
Major General Rabe Abubakar, who previously served as Director of Defence Information, died while in captivity after he and his wife were abducted in Katsina State. His death sparked widespread concern and renewed calls for stronger action against insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria.
The successful rescue of Mrs. Abubakar is being viewed as a significant development in ongoing military efforts to dismantle bandit networks and secure the release of victims held across affected regions.
