Tamunosoye Karibi-George, Miss World Nigeria 2026, has requested a collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in order to broaden youth entrepreneurship and skill development initiatives throughout the nation.
During a courtesy visit to Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the NYSC Director-General, at the scheme’s National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja, Karibi-George made the request.
The beauty queen, a former corps member, stated that the goal of her pet project is to use vocational training to empower young Nigerians.
She revealed that after training young men and women, her fashion design center in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has given them start-up kits and practical skills.
“While in camp at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kubwa-Abuja, in 2021, I participated actively in SAED training and this gave me the impetus to establish a fashion design centre in Port Harcourt,” she said.
“We have been training youth at the centre and giving them start-up kits at the end of their training. We don’t give them money so as to avoid the temptation of them diverting it into another use than the business we train them for.”
Responding, Nafiu commended the beauty queen for promoting youth entrepreneurship, describing her initiative as consistent with the objectives of the NYSC’s SAED programme.
“As an institution, we introduced SAED in 2012 having realised that government alone cannot provide jobs for the ever-increasing number of young graduates annually,” he said.
“We encourage corps members to pick up at least one skill during the orientation period and nurture it afterwards, in addition to the certificates they obtained from school, in order to have multiple streams of income.”
“As we wish you a very successful outing at the global fiesta, we want to assure you of our moral support and prayers,” he said, adding that the international pageant offered her an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage through cultural diplomacy.”
