Toke Makinwa, a Nollywood actress and media personality, has expressed her thoughts on the issue of financial inequality in marriages and relationships.
The movie star claimed that dating someone who is wealthier than you can be problematic, particularly for men, and that she is an advocate of dating within your financial class.
Makinwa stated in a recent episode of Ebuka Obi-Uchendu’s MENtality podcast that many men leave their income brackets to pursue women who are more successful than them, only to later lament that women are materialistic.
She said, “I am a big believer of date within your age and within your class. That way there will not be stories that touch. You will have a good girl at home, a girl who will even make dinner with her own money when you don’t have. Yet, some men will still want to cheat on her with a woman they can’t afford.
“Heaven forbid you end up with a guy who hasn’t blown. The day he blows that is when you will know his true personality. And that scares women. Money doesn’t change people, it just reveal who the person is. So many men are treating women who sacrificed everything for them badly.”
Toke Makinwa’s perspective that dating within your income bracket makes sense certainly has its merits, but can she be entirely right? The truth is, money often reveals a person’s true character, yet it also has the power to change individuals over time. Marriage is a long and complex journey—an ongoing story that unfolds over years, revealing new chapters and surprises.
Ultimately, while financial compatibility is important, understanding, patience, and adaptability are equally vital in building a lasting partnership.
