Widely recognised as one of the influential figures in Nigeria’s modern banking industry, Ovia has built a legacy extending beyond the financial institution he founded more than three decades ago.
His birthday has been marked by congratulatory tributes, including a special message from Zenith Bank Plc, which described its founder as an inspirational leader whose vision and values continue to guide the institution.

Banking, Innovation, Philanthropy
Born on November 4, 1951, Ovia founded Zenith Bank in 1990, emerging as a prominent figure in the transformation of Nigeria’s financial services industry.
As the bank’s pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, he oversaw its expansion from a relatively small financial institution into one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks, with operations extending beyond the country’s borders.
His leadership helped establish Zenith Bank’s reputation for technological innovation, corporate governance and financial performance, contributing to the modernisation of banking services in Nigeria.
Beyond his achievements in finance, Ovia has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to education, youth empowerment and entrepreneurship.
Through the Jim Ovia Foundation, established in 2003, he has supported educational opportunities for young Nigerians, including scholarships and initiatives designed to develop information and communication technology skills.
His investments in education also include James Hope College in Agbor, Delta State, and James Hope University in Lagos, reflecting his commitment to human capital development.
Ovia is also the author of *Africa Rise and Shine*, a memoir documenting his entrepreneurial journey and the establishment of Zenith Bank.
His contributions to Nigeria’s economic development have earned him several honours, including the Commander of the Order of the Niger in 2011 and Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2022.
In 2025, he was also awarded the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of his contributions to business and philanthropy.
As Ovia marks his 75th birthday, his influence remains visible across Nigeria’s banking and educational sectors, with the institutions he established continuing to reflect his commitment to enterprise, innovation and the development of future generations.
