The ancient town of Oyo is mourning the death of Baba, a giant tortoise said to have lived for 420 years inside the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo.
Baba, described as the oldest living animal in Yorubaland, died on Monday after a brief illness.
He was a familiar presence at the palace and was regarded as a link between generations of Yoruba culture and history.
According to the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, generations of monarchs cared for Baba, with royal caretakers providing his favourite foods, including watermelon, leafy grass, and corn pap wrapped in leaves.
Two palace officials also monitored his health and daily routine.
“In Oyo, Baba was regarded as the oldest indigene,” Durojaiye said.
Durojaiye said Baba had been “nourished by a succession of kings who inherited him as part of their ancestors’ relics”.
“His passing marks the end of a unique era for the kingdom and leaves a quiet void in the heart of the palace. Baba was more than a turtle. He represented a part of the Yoruba oral history. Now, the Alaafin has lost an ageless companion,” he said.
In order for future generations to continue learning about the tortoise and his significance in Oyo history, Durojaiye continued, Oba Owoade intended to preserve Baba’s memory.
Wow, 420 years—that’s almost unbelievable. I can’t even imagine the stories, events, and history this tortoise must have witnessed over such an incredible lifespan. Truly awe-inspiring to think about the longevity and resilience of such a remarkable creature.
