Gen Z is a different generation, and they bring a unique energy, creativity and sense of fun into the workplace. Many of them are brilliant, innovative and fearless, but some have not yet developed the workplace culture, patience and discipline that experience often teaches. What can sometimes appear as confidence may also come across as pride, especially when there is little understanding of service, humility, mentorship and the process of rising through the ranks.
Gen Z did not create the world they are responding to. They entered adulthood in a culture of social media, instant access, economic pressure, visible success, constant comparison and rapidly changing technology. That environment has shaped their expectations. They have grown up seeing people become successful almost overnight, businesses built from phones and opportunities created through social media. This can make the slow process of learning, serving, building competence and growing gradually seem unattractive. For some, everything must happen quickly: quick money, quick recognition, quick influence and quick success.
But I would not call Gen Z a lost generation. Many are deeply kind, intelligent and full of potential. Some are silently searching for direction, meaning and something deeper than the fast-paced life around them. Gen Z also values meaning, authenticity and being heard. Many do not respond well to authority simply because of title or age. They tend to ask why. That can sometimes look disrespectful, but when properly channelled, it can also challenge outdated systems and make organisations better. The goal should not be to remove their questioning spirit, but to teach them how to question with wisdom, honour and maturity.
Older professionals should also not mistake every display of confidence from a younger person for arrogance. There needs to be room for both humility and healthy self-belief.
And this is where the God factor makes a difference. Those who combine their intelligence, creativity and boldness with godly wisdom, humility, discipline and a willingness to learn will stand out. Their energy does not need to be suppressed; it needs direction. Their confidence does not need to be broken; it needs character. Their ambition does not need to disappear; it needs purpose.
Gen Z is not a lost generation. They are a powerful generation that needs the right compass.
