Businesswoman Sophia Momodu, who is the mother of Afrobeats musician Davido’s child, has talked about the criticism she received for having an unmarried daughter.
“I was a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. I was mocked, it was crazy. I had to find my strength in the midst of all of that. For the longest time, I did not have a voice. I was famous, popular, but I did not have a voice, it kept getting drowned out by the negativity around my story,” she said.
“If you are Nigerian, you know it is almost a taboo to be a pastor’s daughter and have a child out of wedlock. An aunt called me one day and said a friend of hers had called to talk to me to please keep quiet because it was a topic we are not allowed to talk about as black women.”
“Because of that, I have told my story it was amazing to see that I am not alone. So many women came to me to share it happened to them. People will attempt to silence us, but it is important to tell our stories as women. It matters,”
Momodu addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and discussed her experience.
She recalled being made fun of and finding it difficult to speak up in the midst of the negativity surrounding her story, particularly because she was a “pastor’s daughter,” in a widely shared video from the event.
She claimed that even though she was well-known and well-liked, she struggled for years to advocate for herself because public criticism frequently overshadowed her voice.
In life, many people are quick to judge and faster to mock others, often making them feel less or insignificant. However, it is inspiring to see that today, Sophia Momodu is speaking out and defending herself, refusing to be silenced by judgment and negativity. She now has a voice of her own, and her courage serves as a reminder that everyone deserves respect and understanding. Through her story, she shows that strength comes from standing up for oneself and embracing one’s truth.
