FG Declares June 12 as Public Holiday In Celebration Of Democracy Day

In honor of this year’s Democracy Day celebration, the Federal Government has designated Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday.

The announcement was made by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in a statement released on Thursday by Magdalene Ajani, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary.

He claimed that the yearly commemoration of June 12 continues to be an important turning point in Nigeria’s democratic history, honoring the bravery, tenacity, and selflessness of Nigerians who battled to establish democratic governance in their nation.

“June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country. Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.”

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens.”

While we come together to celebrate Democracy Day and honor the values of freedom and unity, it is disheartening to acknowledge the ongoing plight of children and teachers being kidnapped within our nation. These troubling incidents remind us that the journey toward a truly democratic society requires not only celebration but also urgent action to ensure the safety and security of our citizens.

Let us use this occasion to renew our commitment to safeguarding our democracy and protecting the lives of those who contribute to its growth and development.”

We are not trapped or locked up in these bones. No, no. We are free to change. And love changes us. And if we can love one another, we can break open the sky.

Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment." - Mahatma Gandh
