FEC approves decriminalisation of attempted suicide, advancing mental health reforms while approving major healthcare infrastructure projects nationwide.

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council has approved the decriminalisation of attempted suicide, in a major policy shift aimed at treating people in psychological distress as individuals in need of care rather than offenders.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Mohammad Pate, disclosed this on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

Pate said the council approved an amendment to the Mental Health Act, which will now be forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration.

He said the proposed amendment seeks to remove the criminalisation of attempted suicide under Nigeria’s existing legal framework.

Attempted suicide is currently a criminal offence under provisions of the Criminal and Penal Codes.

The minister said the move reflected a shift towards a mental-health approach that prioritises support, treatment and rehabilitation for people experiencing severe psychological distress.

Pate also disclosed that FEC approved an executive bill establishing a National Centre for Oral Health.

In addition, the council approved major upgrades to the National Hospital, Abuja, including the construction of modular clinics, a high-end wing and a Neuroscience Institute.

The minister said the council also approved the establishment of a N300 billion National Cancer Research and Treatment Centre, with completion expected within 36 months.

The approvals form part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure and improve access to specialised medical services.
