Falconets Outshine England 3-0, Secure Spot In U-20 World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Falconets defeated England 3-0 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals in Poland, continuing their remarkable run at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

In a dominant Round of 16 performance, Nigeria defeated England and maintained Africa’s hopes in the competition thanks to goals from Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei, and Mercy Mamudu.

At the Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Báv, Nigeria got off to a quick start, taking the lead in just eight minutes.

In a flash of individual brilliance, Rafiu attacked down the left wing before slicing through the England defense and scoring past Katie Cox, the goalkeeper.

Uzoma’s outstanding save to stop England forward Princess Ademiluyi kept the Falconets ahead.

After that, England had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot, but Uzoma saved Nigeria once more by stopping Rachel Maltby, who was playing well, and pushing the ball onto the bar and away to safety.

Nigeria maintained their lead going into halftime and came out of it with newfound vigor.

Akekoromowei doubled the lead with a skillfully executed left-footed volley just two minutes into the second half, solidifying the Falconets’ lead.

Nigeria kept creating the more dangerous opportunities while England attempted to find a way back into the match.

In the 73rd minute, Mamudu sealed the victory, giving the Falconets a well-earned 3-0 triumph.

The outcome represents yet another noteworthy victory for Nigeria in the competition. After losing 2-0 to Spain to start their Group F campaign, Moses Aduku’s team played a goalless draw with China, earning just one point from their first two games.

The Falconets responded with a 10-1 thumping of New Caledonia, finishing second in Group F on four points and moving on to the knockout stage with qualification on the line in their final group game.
