Ex-VP Howard-Taylor Hit With Drug Trafficking Charges After Major Cocaine Seizure In Liberia
As part of an investigation into an alleged transnational drug network, Liberia has accused former vise president Jewel Howard-Taylor of drug trafficking, money laundering, and other offenses.
From January 2018 to January 2024, Howard-Taylor was George Weah’s vise president.
She is the ex-wife of former Liberian president and convicted war criminal Charles Taylor.
Less than a month has passed since Liberian authorities declared that they had seized approximately $317 million worth of cocaine headed for Europe, which they described as the nation’s biggest drug bust.
“There will be no selective justice, political protection, sacred cows or compromise with organized criminality,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Every person against whom credible and admissible evidence is established will be investigated and prosecuted without fear, favor or political consideration.”
Three suspected network members, two of whom are Croatian and one of whom is Ukrainian, have also been charged in absentia by the authorities.
According to the statement, both domestic and international legal channels would be used by the government to pursue their arrest.
This development is deeply troubling, especially for a government official who is expected to set a positive example for the citizens. Such involvement in drug trafficking not only tarnishes the reputation of the individual but also undermines public trust in leadership and governance. It highlights the urgent need for stronger accountability and integrity within government ranks to ensure that those in positions of power uphold the highest standards of conduct and serve as role models for the nation.
