Dangote: Damarjog-Dewele Pipeline Will Improve Petroleum Supply Across Djibouti-Ethiopia Corridor
Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Group, says the Damarjog-Dewele pipeline project will improve the movement and distribution of petroleum products along the Djibouti-Ethiopia corridor.
Dangote spoke on Thursday at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Damarjog Oil Terminal and Pipeline Damarjog-Dewele project at the Djibouti Damerjog Industrial Park.
He said the project would connect marine and coastal storage facilities at Damarjog with inland storage and distribution facilities at Dewele.
“That is why this project matters. It will connect the marine and coastal storage facilities at Damarjok to the inland storage and distribution facilities at Dewele. A modern multiproduct pipeline will receive, store, transport and distribute refined petroleum products.”
Dangote said the project would provide a safer and more reliable system for moving petroleum products, particularly as demand for energy and transport continues to grow across the region.
“It will do so in a very safe, efficient and reliable manner.”
He said the first phase would support the movement of key petroleum products and improve supply and inventory management.
“In the first phase, the project will support the movement of a key petroleum product. This includes jet air, automobile gas and premium motor spirit, which will further strengthen supply and improve inventory management and strategic reserve stock.”
Dangote said the project would also reduce pressure on existing transport systems used to move petroleum products along the corridor.
He said the need for a more efficient system was particularly important because the Djibouti corridor carries most of Ethiopia’s import and export trade, including petroleum products.
“Today, the Djibouti corridor carries most of Ethiopia’s import and export trade. This includes petroleum products. The corridor is therefore one of the region’s most strategic economic arteries.”
Dangote said the pipeline would support Ethiopia by improving energy security and reducing logistics challenges associated with petroleum transportation.
“Upon completion, as mentioned, Ethiopia will gain greater energy security and fewer logistics bottlenecks.”
He added that the project would also improve product quality control and support key sectors that depend on reliable petroleum supplies.
“It will also benefit from better product quality control. Key sectors such as industry, aviation, transport, agriculture and construction will be better supported.”
Dangote added that the project would complement road haulage and improve the safety and environmental management of petroleum transportation by reducing long-distance tanker traffic.
“It will also complement road haulage and drive improvements in safety and environmental management. By reducing long-distance tanker traffic, we can ease congestion and reduce road risk. We can also lower the possibility of spills and losses.
Petroleum products movement will be managed in a more orderly and responsible manner.”
