In the women’s lightweight para powerlifting competition, Esther Nworgu led Team Nigeria to an unforgettable one-two finish and won Nigeria’s first gold medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Nigeria won its first gold medal at the Games thanks to Nworgu’s best lift of 123 kg, which earned him 119 points.
Her triumph completed the nation’s para powerlifting team’s outstanding performance. Esther Oyema, a fellow countryman, won the silver medal with a best lift of 125 kg, earning 115.5 points.
Olivia Broome of England, who lifted 119 kg to earn 106.6 points, was awarded bronze.
In addition, Nworgu broke two Commonwealth Games records, demonstrating her supremacy and solidifying her place among Glasgow’s top performers.
The outcome upheld Nigeria’s longstanding tradition in parapowerlifting, one of the country’s most successful sports at significant international tournaments.
While the seasoned Oyema added another significant international medal to her illustrious career, Nworgu, a silver medallist in the Paralympic Games, outscored a competitive field with a calm and technically confident performance.
Congratulations to Nworgu on this incredible achievement! Your dedication, hard work, and perseverance have paid off, inspiring us all and bringing pride to Nigeria. Your historic gold medal not only marks a significant milestone in your career but also uplifts the spirit of our nation. We celebrate your success and look forward to seeing you achieve even greater heights in the future. Well done!
