Benzema’s Lyon Return Collapses After Al Hilal Exit

Karim Benzema willing to return to Lyon for free, but his proposed move from Al Hilal ultimately collapsed.

Karim Benzema came close to rejoining former club Lyon this summer, but the proposed transfer from Al Hilal was not completed.

The 2022 Ballon d’Or winner reportedly offered to return to France and play for his hometown club without receiving a salary, according to L’Equipe.

However, Lyon’s interest came at a time when Benzema was still under contract with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, complicating the potential move.

The former Real Madrid striker has since had his contract with Al Hilal terminated, only six months after joining the Saudi club from Al Ittihad.

Benzema’s departure came after Al Hilal announced the signing of Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins.

The failed move means Benzema will not make the anticipated return to the club where he began his professional career, despite his reported willingness to play for free.
